Google collaborated with ustwo to not only design and develop the experience, but to act as a sounding board, road testing the guidelines ourselves. Today at Google I/O 2015, the Cardboard team debuted Cardboard Design Lab: An interactive VR-based “companion app”, which demonstrates the guidelines and principles crafted earlier this year. These detail principles like “How to avoid simulator sickness” and “How to ground your user with fixed objects.” But what better way to teach and inspire VR designers than with an experience of their very own? Then, earlier this year, a set of written design guidelines for Cardboard were released. Care to develop your own app? There’s an SDK for that. Simply download the Cardboard app, purchase (or make your own) Cardboard Viewer, and you’re off to the virtual races. Last year, they started by introducing Google Cardboard: A simple, inexpensive way for anyone with a smartphone to experience virtual reality. Essentially, it’s a wild west, ripe for exploration and new ideas, and Google’s kicking off the conversation. Now, we’re in the midst of a virtual reality revolution.įrom high-end platforms that cost thousands of dollars to smartphone-run systems, the surface of designing for VR has just barely been scratched. The advances in smartphones and related technologies has finally brought the incredible potential of VR within reach. It’s an experience that’s been around since the mid 80s, but technology always seemed to hold it back. Furthermore, comparisons between CardBoardiZer and methods of Autodesk® 123D Make, demonstrated significantly shorter time-to-prototype and ease of fabrication.Virtual reality. In this paper, we developed interactive algorithms and validated the usability of CardBoardiZer using various 3D models. The system unfolds the model into 2D crease-cut-slot patterns ready for die-cutting and folding. We develop a building platform to allow the designer to 1) import a desired 3D shape, 2) customize articulated partitions into planar or volumetric foldable patterns, and 3) define rotational movements between partitions.

This paper presents CardBoardiZer, a rapid cardboard based prototyping platform that allows everyday sculptural 3D models to be easily customized, articulated and folded. Furthermore, augmenting articulated features to a desired model requires time-consuming synthesis of interconnected joints. We found origami designs are often characterized by pre-synthesized patterns and automated algorithms. Computer-aided design of flat patterns allows designers to prototype foldable 3D objects made of heterogeneous sheets of material.
